Back in the 1980/81 season not only were we in the same division as the current European Champions, Chelsea, but we also had Cardiff City, Swansea City and Shrewsbury Town keeping us company and keeping the esteemed North Wales Police busy!
In Dai Davies we had an international goalkeeper and in front of Dai, Joey was back in a Wrexham shirt and was yet to leave us for this afternoon’s opponents, Chelsea.
Having secured a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge on the opening weekend of the season, the Robins – yes, we still had a proper nickname back then – had just two wins in the 10 games leading up to the Blues’ visit to The Racecourse.
And things didn’t really get any better for Arfon Griffiths’ side as the visitors romped to a 4-0 win with goals from Ian Britton, Phil Driver, Clive Walker and Colin Lee.
